Spacer Fell Out? Here’s What Patients Should Do Next

First—What Is a Spacer, and Why Do You Need One?

Blue orthodontic spacers positioned on the mesial and distal sides of the 1st molar

Spacers, also known as orthodontic separators, are small rubber or metal rings that go between your back teeth. They're placed temporarily to make space for bands or appliances like expanders or braces.

They’re typically worn for about 7–10 days before your next step in treatment.

Help! My Spacer Fell Out. Is That Bad?

It depends.

If a spacer falls out a day or two before your next appointment, it might not be a big deal. In fact, it could mean your teeth have shifted just enough—exactly what the spacer was supposed to do.

But if it falls out several days early, it’s best to give us a call. We might need to replace it to make sure there’s still enough space when we place your appliance or braces.

When to Call Virginia Braces (And When You Can Wait)

Here’s a quick breakdown:

✅ Okay to Wait

Spacer fell out the night before your next appointment
Teeth feel like they’ve moved slightly and there’s no pain
You were told your spacers might not need replacing

📞 Call Us

Spacer fell out more than 3 days before your next visit
You feel soreness, pressure, or the teeth are still tight
You’re unsure if it needs to be put back in

We always recommend calling if you're not sure. Our teams are here to help you feel confident and stay on track.

Whatever You Do—Don’t Try to Put It Back In Yourself

It might seem like an easy fix, but inserting a spacer on your own can damage the gums or shift the teeth incorrectly. Always leave spacer adjustments to your orthodontic team.

Tips to Avoid Losing Another Spacer

  • Avoid sticky or chewy foods like gum, caramels, or gummy candy

  • Don’t floss between teeth with spacers

  • Chew gently and avoid biting down on hard foods like chips, nuts, or crusty bread

  • Try not to pick at them—even with your tongue!
